Microsoft (MS) Word default settings automatically format the text as you type in such a way as to break WinHelp. To prevent such breakages, you must change the Word settings to disable the following "features".

How to prevent the automatic formatting of hyperlinks in Microsoft Word

This ensures that when you type a URL in Word, a hyperlink is not automatically created.  

  1. Click Tools | Auto Correct
  2. Select the AutoFormat as you Type tab
  3. Under Replace as you Type, clear the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box.

How to prevent the automatic formatting of Smart Quotes in Microsoft Word

This ensures that when you type a quote character in Word, a smart quote is not automatically inserted instead.  

  1. Click Tools | Auto Correct
  2. Select the AutoFormat as you Type tab
  3. Under Replace as you Type, clear the "Straight Quotes" with "Smart Quotes" check box.

How to prevent the automatic formatting of bulleted and numbered lists in Microsoft Word

This ensures that when you start a paragraph with a bullet or a number in Word, it is not converted into a list format.  

  1. Click Tools | Auto Correct
  2. Select the AutoFormat as you Type tab
  3. Under Apply as you Type, clear the Automatic bulleted lists and Automatic numbered lists check boxes.
